Everyday I’m Hustlin’: Part Two

So you’re wondering where to go from here? You are forced to be a stay at home mom to care for your special needs child. This wasn’t the path you had imagined for yourself, but you have no other options. Let’s take a look at some ways you can make your hobbies or talents turn into a career. Possibly even find some ways that you can train in the autism/special needs field to help others. We all know how hard it can be to get our child into services, so you decide to take a path that will help your child and other families who are waiting on waitlists.

As a licensed cosmetologist as well as a licensed massage therapist, I know how hard it can be to go to work every day and to trust a therapy center or school to care and teach my child. If you are in a similar field, consider the options of working for yourself. Spend your time building your clientele to be able to make your own schedules and rent your own spaces. Work on your own time and not someone else’s. You can do what it takes to build a salon in your own home. There are licenses required to do this, but it can be worth it in the long run. Maybe you say that it would be impossible to do all of this at your home and you still haven’t built your clientele to work for yourself yet, so now what? Consider the option of taking a break from the industry and focusing more on your child during this time. Remember that it’s ok and won’t necessarily last forever. You can always come back to that career later, when the time is right.

Use this as your motivation to focus on other hobbies you’ve had throughout your life. Take those crafting skills and start making things at home to sell as your side hustle. While crafting these items, you can add some spice by bringing autism awareness to them. Use your imagination!

Have you always dreamed of writing a book but never thought you could? Now is the time!  Many moms of special needs children will turn their journey into a book to help other moms understand what it’s like to live in a world of autism. I’ve always loved writing, but never thought a book was within reach. As I began my autism journey, I’ve probably bought more self-help books and autism books than I ever thought even existed! However, I always felt like there should be more – including books for children to better understand autism. Take this leap if this sounds like something you might be interested in! The process isn’t as hard as it might seem. Plus, what better way to advocate than to spread your message through books for others! Blogging is always a way to start your writing journey. This is where it all started for my journey as an autism mom.

Have some products that you love? Found some items for yourself or your child which have helped you tremendously? This could be anything from soaps, to supplements, to sensory toys, to silly gadgets. Look at becoming a distributor for this product!

Some moms decide to take another route. Their child is on waitlists for therapies and they decide to take matters into their own hands. Whether that means going back to school to become a speech therapist or a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT), we all know the importance of each of these therapies for our children. Opening a center for children with special needs so they can learn life skills is now a number one priority to you. What better time than now?!

Are you laughing right now because these ideas are not even remotely relevant to your talents or interests? Your idea of a stay at home job might look different to you. There are many careers out there today where you are able to work from home. These can be a great start to building something for yourself. This can give you the opportunity to go back to school for that dream job you always wanted. Remember that you can do anything! Your child’s needs will not hold you back. Instead it helps you see a better future for you and your child.

The number one reason women, especially moms, won’t take the chance is fear. They might have the fear of failure. The fear of not knowing where to begin. Whatever you might be feeling, I suggest you take the chance. You may never know until you try. If you’re not sure where to start, look for other mompreneurs and ask questions. Find a mentor that will help you get started. Autism moms stick together, so ask questions and find what is best for you. DON’T WAIT! Our Moms Who Hustle Summit on April 12, 2025 might be just what you’re looking for to get the information on starting a new future for yourself and your child. You were born to hustle and that’s just what you’ll do
